Intended Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurses, case managers and other health care professionals (HCPs) who have an interest in IDD.

Activity Description

Although important steps have been taken over the past decade to meet the health care needs of individuals with IDD and to care for them across their lifespan, all too often HCPs receive little training and have little experience in meeting the needs of this underserved population. Individuals with IDD may have difficulty accessing person-centered, timely physical and behavioral health care due to physical, cognitive and/or financial barriers. Specific challenges with communication are often perceived as barriers to the provision of care.

This webcast will discuss optimal strategies that can be utilized by the multidisciplinary health care team to ensure individuals with IDD receive high quality care that is delivered in a manner that ensures dignity and respect for the individual's needs and goals. Current practice as well as challenges faced by HCPs in caring for this population will be discussed along with best practices and strategies that can be used to optimize health care experiences and maximize individual outcomes.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this educational activity, participants should be able to

  • Identify challenges and barriers faced by HCPs in caring for children and adults with IDD
  • Define best practices that can be implemented by the multidisciplinary health care team to ensure that patients with IDD receive optimal physical and behavioral care
  • Explain how HCPs can work as a team with families and caregivers to optimize the health care experience for children and adults with IDD
  • Understand the importance of self-advocacy and inclusion in health care decisions from the perspective of an individual whose life is impacted by IDD

About the Presenters
Marisa C. Brown, MSN, RN’s interest in community collaborative approaches to human services delivery crosses the many projects that she has coordinated during her more than 20 years with the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development. She currently directs the DC Health Resources group that focuses on increasing access to health care for individuals with IDD.

Kim Bullock, MD, is a graduate of Yale University (BA) and the University of Michigan Medical School. Following the completion of her residency at Georgetown Medical Center, Dr. Bullock initially served as an emergency physician at Providence Hospital Emergency Department. Past appointments include Medical Director for the Seton House Substance Abuse Center at Providence Hospital, Vice Chairperson/Assistant Director for the Emergency Department and Director of Ambulatory Emergency Services. Dr. Bullock is currently a Clinical Associate Professor, Director of the Community Health Division and Project Investigator for the HRSA Community Health Leadership Development and Primary Care Health Policy Fellowships at Georgetown University. She is also the Chief Medical Officer for the Georgetown/Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) Partnership grant. She offers technical assistance on best practices and evidence-based care as well as collaboration and liaison support for community physicians, hospitals and agencies serving this vulnerable population. Dr. Bullock has given presentations at many national and local conferences on medical issues relevant to intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). She has also published in the field and served as a consultant on many IDD grants. Dr. Bullock has promoted the education of health care professionals regarding the care of the IDD population. She brings a multidisciplinary systems approach to care management and highlights the importance of cross-professional dialogue in improving the health and well-being of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
